20 Cover Story Candy packaging manufacturer uses geothermal—with a
twist; Takes a deep dive to chill plant and machinery
Flexible packaging manufacturer Multifilm has honed its expertise at making plastic film for twist-wrap packaging applications, which are primarily
confectionary. Critical to the quality and capabilities of the manufacturer’s
flexible-film packaging is cooling each of the production processes to precise temperatures.
When the plant’s chiller needed replacing, the manufacturer installed a
unique geothermal system that cools and heats not only its air but its
manufacturing machinery as well.

29 Sage Supplier: Small Wind Energy
SW manufacturer makes onsite wind power accessible,
affordable
Distributed wind turbine manufacturer Southwest Windpower makes onsite
wind power accessible, affordable and adorable. Co-founder Andy Kruse
also took it to the Hill to get Small Wind a piece of the tax incentive pie in
the form of an investment tax credit.
34 Recovering heat, losing emissions Boiler-generated steam remains an efficient method of heat transfer for
most manufacturing applications. An advanced heat recovery system using transport membrane condenser (TMC) technology enhances boiler
performance, reduces water usage, decreases energy consumption, and
lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

38 Using Web-based control systems to manage building utility usage
Web-based building controls can yield substantial energy savings, if used
correctly and in the right applications. Foundry manufacturer Peerless was
able to bring its offshore manufacturing back to the U.S. with better energy
control and management.
