Cradle-to-Cradle Obsoletes
Cradle-to-Grave
I greatly enjoyed your editorial in the
May/June issue of Green Manufacturer,
“The end of the Throwaway Society.” I
too laud this evolution.
In your final section you discuss the
concept of “cradle-to-grave.” I contend
that this, too, is a concept of yesteryear. Ecosavvy companies today think
in terms of cradle-to-cradle. That is, if
resources can be continually reused or
recycled, they will never actually meet
their end of life. This closes the loop on
a resource’s life cycle, perpetuating its
useful existence.
As an example, savvy retailers are
able to divert their food wastes to composting facilities, which convert their
materials into bags of compost that are
resold to consumers on the retailers’
shelves.
Help Launching
Zero-Waste-to-Landfill?
I just read the letter in Re: from Roger
Nielsen, COO of Daimler Trucks North
America [May/June, p. 8]. Our site is
just getting started pursuing a Zero-Waste-to-Landfill program and has set
a goal to reach this by the end of
2015. Our team to scope this has just
formed.
In his letter, Mr. Nielsen invites visits
from other manufacturers who are taking on this challenge that they reached
in October 2009. Asheville is just over
two hours from Fort Mill, S.C., and we’d
love to visit them to see what they did
to get started.
Is there any way you can pass this
request on to Mr. Nielsen?

Concerned About Green Motivations
I came across the editorial “The green
jobs myth” in the May 20 issue of
Investors.com and thought it might be
something your magazine should be
aware of.
Although I too am concerned about
the environment and conservation, I
am also concerned about the process
and motivations behind the effort.
Editor’s Note: Other manufacturers
interested in touring Freightliner can
send your notes of interest to me at
kateb@greenmanufacturer.net. Please
put “Freightliner Tour” in the subject
line. Green Manufacturer will feature
Freightliner’s fantastic zero-waste-to-landfill journey in the Sept./Oct. issue.
