Wire-cut EDMs
Sodick Inc., a
manufacturer
of EDM technology, has released
the VZ300L and
VZ500L linear motor-driven wire-cut
The machines feature glass scale
feedback that provides true machine
positioning at all times, the company
reports. The scales are mounted on the
moving axes; this enables them to measure machine accuracy consistently.
The recycle circuit saves on energy
cost by recycling unused discharge
pulses that were not originally used in the
discharge process. The high-speed, elec-trolysis-free circuit eliminates oxidation
and helps improve part straightness.
The machines are suitable for parts
that require close-tolerance and fine
surface finishes. The VZ300L features
a 13.8- by 9.8- by 8.7-in. XYZ stroke and
has a maximum workpiece weight of
1,100 lbs. The VZ500L features a 19.7-
by 13.8- by 9.8-in. XYZ stroke and a maximum workpiece weight of 1,870 lbs.

Medical waste repurposing
Outside the hospital setting, about 9
million people in the U.S. self-inject for
conditions such as diabetes and allergies, producing 3 billion syringes per
year that are discarded in non-health
care settings like workplaces and
homes.
Sharps Compliance Inc. has introduced the Waste Conversion Process
to repurpose this waste into new products. The patent-pending process transforms discarded needles, syringes,
lancets, and other medical waste into a
new product called PELLA-DRX—clean,
compact pellets that are used as raw
material in the manufacture of industrial resources for everything from homes
to highways and high-rise buildings.
None of the medical waste processed
goes to a landfill.
